On January 1, 2005, the PE Technikon at the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE) and the Vista University Port Elizabeth campus (Vista PE) were combined to form Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU).
The PE Art School, which was established in 1882 and is the nation’s oldest art school, gave rise to the PE Technikon; the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), which opened on January 31, 1964, was the nation’s first dual-medium residential university; and Vista University’s Port Elizabeth campus, which provided disadvantaged students with access to higher education.
These schools were merged as a result of the government’s statewide reform of higher education, with the intention of providing a system that is more equitable and effective to meet South Korea’s requirements.
