Currently, as of April 2024, the South African government is not disbursing the SASSA SRD (Social Relief of Distress) grant of R350 per month. However, I can provide information regarding the previous application process for the SRD grant, which was available from August 2020 to April 2022.

The application procedure for the SRD grant varied depending on the applicant’s preferred method, including online, WhatsApp, email, or physical application at SASSA offices. Nonetheless, the eligibility criteria and application process remained unchanged.

To qualify for the SRD grant, applicants were required to be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees registered with the Department of Home Affairs, aged 18 or above. They needed to demonstrate that they had no income or earned less than R3500 per month and were facing distress caused by a disaster or unforeseen emergency, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the August 2020 application period, applicants were requested to submit the following documents:

  • A copy of their ID document or passport.
  • A completed and signed application form.
  • A letter from their employer confirming job loss or loss of income due to COVID-19, or any other supporting documentation indicating income loss.
  • A bank statement or proof of bank account displaying the account holder’s name, bank account number, and bank branch code.

SASSA processed the applications, and eligible applicants received the SRD grant of R350 per month for a maximum of six months. After the six-month period, applicants were required to reapply if they still met the eligibility criteria.

It is important to emphasize that the SRD grant served as a temporary relief measure and did not provide a permanent solution to financial distress. The South African government has implemented various measures, such as job creation initiatives and skills development programs, to address poverty and unemployment in the long run.
