In what was then known as the Grand Hotel in Port Alfred, Stenden South Africa opened its doors in 2002. All hotel rooms are currently occupied by students because the hotel was modified to meet the needs of a university campus. EISS was the initial operating name of Stenden South Africa: The Educational Institute for Service-Learning Stenden University was created when CHN University and Drenthe University merged in 2008, transforming EISS into Stenden South Africa. The addition of “South Africa” was chosen because only public universities in South Africa are permitted to use the term “university.”

Stenden College of Applied Sciences is a global college which has areas in the Netherlands: There are international locations in Doha (Qatar), Port Alfred (South Africa), Bangkok (Thailand), and Bali (Indonesia) in addition to Leeuwarden (head office), Groningen, Meppel, Assen, and Emmen. Students can study at all of Stenden’s locations outside of the United States thanks to a novel concept known as a “Grand Tour.” Stenden has over 800 employees and approximately 11,000 students, including 2500 international students from 65 countries. It offers Associate Degrees, Bachelor’s Degrees, 6 Master’s Degrees, 13 “Lectorates” and knowledge networks, in the fields of (Service) Management, Education, Welfare, Economics, and Technology.

Stenden South Africa is a campus of Stenden University of Applied Sciences. It offers local students a Bachelor of Business Administration in Hospitality Management and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Disaster Management, as well as various minor programs for “Grand Tour” students. It is authorized by the South African Department of Education to offer the Bachelor of Business Administration in Disaster Management and the Bachelor of Commerce in Hospitality Management; The courses have been approved by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
