You can learn more about the 2024-2025 UFS Online application requirements on this page.

What are the prerequisites for enrolling at the University of the Free State?
We anticipate the following for degree programs at the University of the Free State:

  • You have an NSC, NCV, or an equivalent qualification that allows you to enter degree programs (for example, a Bachelor’s degree).
  • You are eligible to enroll in the program of your choice because you meet all of the prerequisites. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission because each program has a limited number of spots available.
  • You have a minimum level of 4 (50%) proficiency in either English or Afrikaans, the two UFS languages of instruction (only applicable to certain programs).
  • To enroll in a specific university module, you must pass a specific set of school subjects with a minimum grade. For example, if you want to major in physics and take engineering courses in college, you must have a grade point average of 70% in mathematics in grade 12. Please see the section on faculty-specific admission requirements for a list of the prerequisite subjects and proficiency standards required for each program.

All students should be aware of the following information:

  • You are encouraged to apply as soon as possible because each program has a limited number of spots. You will not be admitted or able to register if your information is not available when we process your admissions application and enter it into the UFS databases. As a result, meeting deadlines is critical. Because there are only a few spots available in each program, meeting the minimum requirements for admission does not guarantee admission.
  • Senior National Diploma: A copy of your National Senior Certificate must be submitted with your application (NSC).

acceptance as a student at the UFS

  • Academic achievement is highly valued at the UFS; the higher your AP score, the better your chances of selection and admission to study. Because each program has a limited number of spots available, meeting the minimum requirements for admission does not guarantee selection and admission. During the admissions process, which lasts until all openings are filled, applicants with the highest AP scores are given priority. You will not be chosen if you do not meet the minimum admission requirements for the program of study in which you wish to enroll. Consult the faculty-specific admission requirements for each of the programs you’re interested in, then apply to the two that best match your interests, goals, and abilities.
  • Application: Ensure that all required supporting documentation is included and that the application is complete. Your application will be delayed if you submit an incomplete application or lack certain documents. Fill out the application completely; for example, indicate whether you require on-campus housing or financial aid in the appropriate section.
Transferring students must submit original copies of their official study record and conduct certificate with their application if they are transferring from another tertiary institution.
  • Students from other countries applying as international students must provide proof of a conditional exemption certificate issued by the Matriculation Board in addition to their certified school-leaving certificate, diplomas, and transcripts. Submit a conditional exemption application at mb.usaf.ac.za.

UFS Admission Requirements

  • You will be CONDITIONALLY ADMITTED based on your Grade 11 or equivalent results if you meet all of the minimal requirements for the intended program of study. Please keep in mind that not all of the programs in the Faculty of Health Sciences offer conditional admission.

UFS Admission Requirements

  • Your final Grade 12 results will determine your admission to the program of your choice. After the Department of Education releases your Grade 12 results, you will be notified immediately of the university’s decision regarding your admission. As a result, you must ensure that the contact information on your application form is correct.

Your admission point (AP) total is calculated as follows:

If you want to apply, you should carefully read the program’s admission requirements. The UFS calculates your AP grade using the NSC achievement scale. The AP score is divided into seven levels. It should be noted that no points will be awarded for achievement levels of less than 30% in the six academic subjects. When calculating your AP score for admission, Life Orientation from achievement level 5 (60%) or higher receives one point.

NSC Level UFS AP
7 (90%–100%) 8
7 (80%–89%) 7
6 (70%–79%) 6
5 (60%–69%) 5
4 (50%–59%) 4
3 (40%–49%) 3
2 (30%–39%) 2
1 (0%–29%)
To calculate your AP, you can use the following example:
For five (5) academic subjects, you must obtain a level 5 (60%) 5 x 5 = 25
For one (1) further academic subject, you must obtain a level 4 (50%) 1 x 4 = 4
For Life Orientation, a level of 5 (60%) or higher to score 1 point 1 x 1 = 1
UFS overall AP score = 30
