Student Accommodation at UKZN Students can study in comfort on the beautiful campuses of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. For prospective students, the aforementioned web portal has meticulously documented its various campuses.
Accommodation for University of KwaZulu-Natal students
- Residence halls are available on the Edgewood campus. There are catering and self-catering options available. On campus, there are 631 students living in 11 residences. Women constitute 55% of the population and are housed apart from men. Single and double rooms are available. Some residences provide self-catering options. Access control doors are installed in all residences. Postgraduate students have access to five additional flats, each of which can accommodate five students.
- The Howard College and Medical School residences in Durban house approximately 2162 students. There is fierce competition for available positions, and not all applicants can be accepted. The two residence halls are Charles Smith Hall and Albert Luthuli Hall. Charles Smith Hall is made up of 12 individual residences that are conveniently located near the main academic buildings, banks, shops, and the Medical School. The Cluster Residence and the six-story Tower Residence comprise Albert Luthuli Hall. This complex is located on the western side of the Howard College campus, away from the academic buildings but close to most sports fields and the Old Mutual Sports Centre. Access control, lounges and television rooms, intercom systems, call boxes, and parking is all available. The aforementioned web portal has meticulously documented its various campuses for prospective students.
- The apartments at St Hillier are fully furnished two and three-bedroom apartments. Each student has their own bedroom. The lounge, kitchen, and bathroom are shared by all occupants. There is also parking and a laundry room. St Hillier is located in Umbilo, directly across from Queensmead Shopping Mall, and is a short walk from the Medical School campus. It is accessible via the Howard College bus route.
- This residence has 90 large single rooms, as well as entertainment and study areas and tennis courts. It’s a catering company. There are laundry and parking facilities available. J V Smit is near the Medical School campus and a bus route that connects Howard College and the city.
- Residences house approximately 1 640 students. One-third of the enrolled students live in one of the four residence halls. For off-campus housing assistance, contact the Student Housing helpdesk.
- Petrie Hall is primarily a residence hall for female students in their first and second years. Eleanor Russell Hall, University Hall, and Lodge are the three large residences located near the Science Block, Administration, Student Services, the library, tennis courts, shops, Post Office, and banks. A student committee is in charge of ensuring that student life runs smoothly in all residences.
- The William O’Brien residence (men) is on campus and consists of single rooms distributed across six blocks with communal kitchens. The residence sports program, senior and junior lounges, a large communal games room, and a visitor’s reception lounge all cater to extracurricular activities. A braai area, car repair, wash bays, and secure parking for all residents’ vehicles are also available.
- Malherbe Residence (men and women) is direct across Durban Road from the University gate. The common rooms and TV lounge are shared by both male and female guests. A quadrangle of trees, shrubs, and grass surround the residence, providing space for students to play ball games or relax. A braai area is also available. The Students’ Union, the Science Block, the Old Arts Block, shops, banks, and the Post Office are all within walking distance. The New Arts Block, Commerce, Law, Agriculture, and Life Sciences Blocks, on the other hand, are only a 10-minute walk away. Brucian House and Robleigh House are the names of the Malherbe Flats (postgraduate students). They are ideal for small groups of students looking for three, four, or five bedrooms to share. Sharing a room with another person is not an option. The rooms are mostly furnished and self-contained. There are several lock-up garages available for rent.
- Denison (men and women) is located on the old golf course portion of campus in a quiet park-like setting. Denison has its own kitchen complex as well as a clubhouse with a large communal lounge and the Denison pub. The residence has a gym, TV, snooker, and table tennis.
- On the Westville campus, there are off-campus and self-catering flats, as well as on-campus residences with meals available upon request.
- There are 1810 students on campus. There is fierce competition for available positions, and not all applicants can be accepted. The four residential blocks are S-Block, R-Block, P-Block, and O-Block. The O-Block is reserved for females only, while the others are mixed. Each residence has access control, television rooms, and parking. Except for O-Block, which still has a dining facility, all residences are self-contained.
- 713 students live in off-campus housing. The competition is fierce, and it is impossible to accept all applications. These apartments are fully furnished. If a single room is available, postgraduate students can request it. All students live in double rooms. The kitchen and bathroom are shared by all occupants. The Bedford Hall and San Sabil residences are located on Hospital Road in town. Dunstaple Heights is on Varsity Drive, whereas Santa Cruz, which is only for postgraduate students, is in Reservoir Hills.
- For admission to University residence, local first-year applicants must apply to the Central Applications Office (CAO). There is no need for a separate application. It is not always possible to accommodate a student in the location of his or her choice.
- International students at KwaZulu-Natal University must apply for housing.
- The deadline for undergraduate applications is September 30.
- Admission is based on financial need, academic potential, and distance from home.
- If admitted, the University cannot guarantee that applicants will be assigned to a residence hall, and they may be required to find off-campus housing.
- All students will be required to sign a Residence Code of Conduct.
- In 2021, residence fees would consist of an annual accommodation charge of R25 892. For local students, the accommodation deposit is R2750 (2018). Meals are not included in these fees. (A year’s worth of food costs approximately R23 980.) Before registering, international students must pay 25% of their residence fees. Bed linen is not provided in student housing.
- Self-catering facilities are available in all Pietermaritzburg, Howard College, Edgewood, and Westville residences. Students are expected to prepare their own meals. Students must provide their own crockery, cutlery, pots, and other cooking utensils. On campus, there are also food options. On the Westville campus, meals are served in on-campus residences. - Students must provide their own linen and laundry. Each residence has its own laundry facilities. Students are also expected to clean their own rooms.
- During vacations, students may request to stay in residence; cost information is available from Student Housing Offices.
