Postgraduate Diplomas (NQF 8) |
Requirements |
- A suitable Bachelor’s degree OR admission to the status of that degree in accordance with Rule GR7 (a) OR achievement of a level of competence as defined by Rule GR7 (b)
- Additional criteria for admission to study may be established by a School/College. College Handbooks can be found at www.ukzn.ac.za.
- If the HEQF (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met, some schools/colleges may accept an Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma.
Duration
- A minimum of two semesters must be completed in a row. All modules must be completed at the University unless approved by the Senate.
Curriculum
- The curriculum will include advanced reflection, practice, and research methods in the area of specialization, as well as a sustained research project, in accordance with Senat-approved College rules.

- A relevant Bachelor’s degree OR admission to that degree’s status under Rule GR7 (a) OR achievement of the level of competence specified in Rule GR7 (b)

Duration
- A minimum of two semesters must be completed in a row. All modules must be completed at the University unless approved by the Senate.
Curriculum:
A prescribed research project must account for at least 25% of the degree credits in one of the modules in the Honours degree curriculum.
- A relevant prerequisite degree OR
- Admission to that degree’s status under Rule GR7 (a) OR
- Attained a level of competence as defined by rule GR7 (b)

Coursework
- Students must complete at least two consecutive semesters (full time) or four consecutive semesters before the degree can be conferred (part time).
With permission and in accordance with College regulations, periods of graduate-level attendance at another institution or College may be accepted. (Seek advice from the appropriate school.)
Research
- Before the degree can be conferred, students must complete at least two consecutive semesters (full-time) or four consecutive semesters (part-time).
Curriculum
Coursework
- Candidates must complete all modules, one of which is a dissertation on a research topic approved by the Senate. Typically, the dissertation module will account for 33-50% of the degree’s credit value.
Research
- Candidates must pursue an appropriate research program on a topic related to the University’s studies. Students must also follow any other college/school requirements.

- Before the degree can be conferred, students must complete four consecutive semesters (full-time) or eight consecutive semesters (part-time).
Curriculum
- Students must complete an approved research program on a topic related to their studies at the university. A program of this type must contribute significantly to the subject’s knowledge or understanding, as well as demonstrate originality through the discovery of new facts or the exercise of independent critical power. Students must also follow any additional college/school requirements.
